Girls golf succeeds at “Golf Fore a Cure” tournament

The varsity and junior varsity Lionette golf teams both placed second at the “Golf Fore a Cure” Pink Tournament on Thursday, Oct. 24, at the West Ridge Golf Course in McKinney.

The Lionettes placed second out of 14 teams. Varsity scored 351 as a team, and junior varsity scored 440. Freshman Brittany Bruce and sophomore Laurel Plunk both shot their personal bests at the tournament.

“It’s the best score we’ve had this year as a team, and it was exciting to place second because we’re not used to placing that high,” junior Amelia Kinsinger said.

The Pink Tournament is an annual tournament to help raise awareness for breast cancer. Cancer survivors, family members and friends came to support the event and the golfers. Frisco Centennial Coach Ms. Lisa Sadler gave a speech at the beginning of the tournament giving facts about breast cancer.

“It was cool playing at this tournament because they [tournaments] can be boring, but this one had a theme and a reason we were playing,” Amelia said. “We were supporting a good cause and it was really awesome seeing all the people wearing pink.”

The tournament held special significance for MHS girl’s golf coach Mr. Jeff Jacobson.

“My stepmother had breast cancer and had a double mastectomy,” Mr. Jacobson said. “I think it’s a cool tournament just because it brings awareness. It’s good to make young women aware at a young age about how to catch the disease early and make it curable and not deadly.”
