The Lionettes basketball team, who sit at 3-3 ,consist of only two seniors, Brianna Blackburn and Breana Small-Peppers.
But these two seniors know how to play– and they have been throughout high school.
“It’s not that weird that only me and Smallz are the only seniors on varsity this year,” Senior Brianna Blackburn said. “Freshman year we played together on JV and since then people have been quitting. We’ve excelled through it all.”
Although the Lionettes are a young team, Small-Peppers still has hope in the squad.
“I guess you could say we have a young team,” Breana said. “We started the season off slow and we’ve had some immature moments but I know we will get there.”
Although some would say the Lionettes are at a disadvantage for being such an inexperienced team, Blackburn believes the girls make up for this apparent flaw.
“Yes we are at a disadvantage with a young team,” Blackburn said. “But I know we have lots of athleticism, we work hard, and we have a great coach that keeps us focused and in line.”
Blackburn has playoffs and a state championship in sight for the Lionettes.
“Playoffs are always a hope,” Brianna Blackburn said. “ I think we will make it. We started off on the wrong foot but we will make it back in there; this district is unpredictable.”
The Lionettes face-off against Highland Park Scotts tomorrow night at Highland Park at 7:30.
“I feel like we’re doing well right now– we are tied for fourth in district,” Small-Peppers said. “But if we beat Highland Park, then that would be great. It will help us a lot.”
