EDITORIAL: MORP madness

Jacob Frazier

With MORP approaching and the debate of when and where to hold it still in question, voting has been arranged to decide between holding it either Friday or Saturday. The decision should have been simple and ended with the smarter decision of holding MORP on Friday rather than Saturday, but because of the board’s indecisiveness, they decided to let “all” of the students decide. Their idea of letting the students decide is hugely flawed because of a hefty number of students who are unable to voice their opinion and vote.

The voting sessions will ultimately decide whether MORP will be held Friday at the Plano Event Center, or on Saturday in the school cafeteria. For the Friday time MORP would be held at the event center, but it will conflict with events such as sports. While the Saturday MORP won’t be in conflict with school events, it will not be held at the event center, but rather in the school cafeteria.

So the ultimate question is whether we would want it in the cafeteria, or have it conflict with school events. The smart decision would be to hold it Friday. Though it would conflict with some other activities, it would be held at a more appealing setting. As evident of the school-staged homecoming at Boyd, with a turnout that was little more than a small crowd, we should hold MORP in a more likable location to try to attract more students to come.

The idea for voting is to have senior voting in lunches during Oct. 21-30 and the Nov. 6-7, along with an indiscernible time voting on Twitter. This is a time bomb of chaos waiting to be set. You are talking about three different and possibly overlapping time frames, two locations and who knows how many people trying to vote. Not only that, but two of these voting sessions only allow, “senior voting.” With no further explanation, it can be assumed that only seniors are allowed to vote at lunch. Add that to only students with Twitter are allowed to vote online, it would not be an exaggeration to say that only about half of the student body has the option to vote, and even fewer will voice their opinions.

What should happen is to let the date and location be voted on, but not like the current plan. We should make it easier to track and vote by running a poll on the Manestream website, and take the overall result as the student bodies answer.

Voting to decide where and when to hold this year’s MORP are being held until, presumably, Nov. 7, and for students and vote managers alike lets hope they dance their way out of this situation before the chaos catches up to them.
