Crosstown Showdown highlights

Last week was another Cross-Town Showdown, but unlike last year, this one was with an old rival. McKinney North was the matchup this game and it hasn’t been that way since 2011.

Beat the drum is an annual tradition McKinney High preceding the Cross-Town Showdown.

“It’s a great way for the clubs to bond.” junior Demi Davenport said. “It’s a great tradition that we should keep alive.”

The tradition is when student based clubs beat a drum 24 hours before the football game the following day.

“I was there for 4 hours, and I wanted to be there that long,” senior Saad Shahabuddin said. “It was my last year to do beat the drum. I love the pride that goes with it.”

For students who have never joined in on this tradition, there dreams and the reality of it never quite matched up.

“It was different than what I thought.” sophomore Anne Penprase said. “I didn’t think there would be games and so many other activities besides beating the drum. It was interesting seeing the drum transform into rubble.”

Beat the drum is an exciting event every year for the school.

“I love the energy and spirit during beat the drum,” senior Alex Saleh said. “All of the clubs had so much energy and I had so much fun. beating the drum and keeping the tradition alive was awesome.”
