After more than 30 years of involvement in MISD sports, former head football coach Ron Poe and his family have a continued presence in McKinney. Freshman Jon Wayne Poe, oldest grandson of Ron Poe, has just begun making his mark on the city.
Ron Poe, the namesake for the only high school stadium in McKinney, coached MHS football, led the team to the state championships twice and stacked up several district championship trophies.
“That was back when we put the whoop on Allen all the time,” Jon Wayne said.
Jon Wayne remembers the first time he played in his grandfather’s stadium.
“I remember scoring a touchdown in sixth grade the first time I’d ever been there.” Jon Wayne said. “It was such a great feeling.”
Because of his relation to Ron Poe, Jon Wayne receives special privileges for any events at the stadium.
“I get into games for free,” Jon Wayne said. “ I also get into the press box whenever he’s at the stadium.”
Although football is important to him, Jon Wayne is also involved in other sports.
“I’m on the school’s football and baseball teams,” Jon Wayne said. “Outside of school I love to mountain bike, downhill skateboard, and snow ski.”
Jon Wayne is proud to be a part of such a notable family but doesn’t feel pressure to live up to his family name.
“They’re big shoes to fill but I’m happy where I’m at,” Jon Wayne said. “ However it’s overwhelming to know that my granddad made such a big impact on McKinney football.”
