Enchanted forest beats out space prom for theme

As the end of the year approaches, student council had one final frontier to conquer: space prom. Seniors voted on the different prom themes on a survey in english class and students were surprised to see that Space didn’t win, Enchanted Forest did.

Results for the survey were posted April 6 and prom will be held May 14 at the Sheraton in McKinney.

“Starting off with space prom a lot of kids came up with this idea and it was really cool at first,” student council president Jia Qureshi said. “The only problem we would have with space prom is we couldn’t hang anything from the ceilings or the walls of the Sheraton, it is a really nice very elegant hotel, so that really takes away a lot of elements of space prom.”

When student council brainstormed ideas for the theme, senior Zack Pfeil and junior Paul Castle came up with the idea for Space Prom and began to spread the word.

“When we were coming up for theme ideas for prom, ideas were thrown around like Night in Paris and Arabian Nights,” senior and student council member Zack Pfeil said. “Then we came up with the idea of Space prom and everybody said no, but me and Paul were just like yes, yes, yes. After that someone started that hashtag space prom and it kinda went viral and the idea of space prom went around but then student council came around some flaws.”

Senior Roxy Farokhnia took the responsibility to make sure Space Prom would be considered.

“They (student council) told us that in order to be considered I had to write up ideas,” senior Roxanna Farokhnia said. “So I wrote up a paper explaining my ideas and I created a Pinterest board and they did consider it but it was too expensive, I didn’t think it would be as expensive as some of the other things they were considering.”

Student council was suprised that the theme attracted attention.

“From the start we had already discussed the themes as seniors of student council, and what we were and weren’t going to put on the survey,” senior and student council member Zara Firuz said. “Not a lot of us thought that space prom would get as much like attention as it did.”

Student council posted a pie chart on their Twitter account which showed Enchanted Forest as the winner, but other themes were split up into sub categories which may have changed the result.

“I think why a lot of seniors thought the poll was rigged is because a lot of them had an idea of how it would come out and it came out differently,” senior class president Danylea Gotcher said. “But we actually did the poll with all senior english classes so it was pretty unbiased.”

After the results of the poll were released, senior Josh Brinkmann decided to run his own poll via Twitter.

“Student council posted the results for the voting poll for the prom themes and I thought it didn’t look right because nobody I knew voted for the enchanted forest prom, and so I thought I would try my own poll,” Josh said. “I came up with the result that Space Prom was the one that won and the Enchanted Forest got third place to Ancient Greece, I thought it was kinda corrupt.”

Despite controversy, Jia stands behind the choice of Enchanted Forest.

“This year’s prom theme is going to be Enchanted Forest, and that is for sure and we are really excited about that.” Jia said. “What I find really unique is we are the only school that seniors do pick the senior theme, we have actually reached out to our senior class.”
