When Pam McBride came to McKinney in September, she brought with her a new class, club and the idea of soccer-playing robots.“I’ve done robotics at a private school and I’ve also taught it at a park and rec. department in Richardson,” Mrs. McBride said. “They started adding it to classes when they found out I could teach it.”After teaching robotics for eight years, Mrs. McBride remembers it was her son who first inspired her.
“My son always enjoyed Lego’s,” Mrs. McBride said. “I bought him a kit, then I contacted Lego education.” For the first semester, 16 students are enrolled in Introduction to Engineering. Story continues below advertisement “The class is kind of small right now so it’s a little bit weird, but it’s fun because we do cool stuff,” senior Imani McGarrell said. “Right now we’re building robots and learning how to program them. We’re going to program them to play soccer against each other.” After December, Mrs. McBride plans to add a Robotics Club. “Anyone can join the club, you don’t have to be in the class,” Mrs. McBride said. “My goal for the club is to compete. We’ll be competing in different kinds of challenges, right now Lego robotics.”
