The countdown is almost over. June first, the day seniors have been looking forward to for months, is quickly approaching. But what happens after that? Settling on a college is a choice that will majorly impact the rest of your life. Here’s a hint for those who are still unsure as to where to go.
Visiting a campus is a leading element as to where to go. Spending time where you’ll potentially be spending the next four years of your life is something you shouldn’t overlook.
Jenney Ruby graduated from McKinney High School in 2011. She is currently a freshman at Schreiner University, located about 60 miles northwest of San Antonio. “Schreiner called me one day randomly to talk about the school. The student representative was very sweet and talked to me for a long time.” Jenney said over all, picking a college was simple and it seemed right. “I really liked how small the school was, and the area of Texas it’s in is so pretty and far enough away from home. The campus is so nice and easy to navigate with no crowds.”
Size matters. Don’t like McKinney High’s over crowded halls? Don’t pick a large college. Just because it’s small doesn’t mean you won’t have fun. There as advantages to small schools, such as small classes and that close knit feel. Big campuses are probably more your style if you like many social events and always meeting new people.
Senior Dan Jarvis talked about being around new faces. “Actually, I’m not going to lie. Don’t go to a college where all your friends are going. It’s lame if you know everyone, and then it’s just high school all over again.”
Picking a college based on a major could be helpful; yet in a study done by Dr. Fritz Grupe, creator of mymajors.com, found eighty percent of college students will end up changing their major before graduation. An average student will change their major around three times before they graduate.
