For seniors in cosmetology, acquiring their license certification to work in a salon is a huge accomplishment.
“As a teacher, I’m proud of my students for putting in the work it takes and having the dedication to practice before and after school,” cosmetology teacher Barb Romerhausen said. “To get their license, it means they have what it takes to have a job and provide for themselves or a family.”
Four periods a day, cosmetology students practice practicals, theory and various skills.
“Every day we wear our scrubs, we clock in, and start our practicals,” senior Emma Hale said. “Practicals are basically perms, wet sets, shampooing, and haircuts.”
For students such as senior Ashley Harris who have a passion for cosmetology, the class wasn’t easy to come by.
“I’ve been interested in cosmetology since I was five or six years old,” Harris said. “When I found out they had a cosmetology class here, I transferred over from Boyd.”
Having an open mind and covering all the bases is important to pass a state test and gain state certification.
“We sometimes get visitors who come in and show us some neat tricks or styles,” Harris said. “We’ve seen hair, eyebrows, permanent makeup tattoos, extensions, and perms.”
To earn their cosmetology license, the state requires 1500 hours and a passing grade on the state board test.
“I hope to be in marketing one day to represent a big brand, or maybe even own my own salon,” Hale said. “I just keep telling myself that in the end it will all be worth it.”
