video by Ty Holt and Alex HooperDisc golf has become a popular new sport among students for numerous reasons: it’s simple, inexpensive and requires little athletic ability. The object of the game is to complete an 18-hole course with the minimal amount of frisbee tosses possible.
“It’s a fun sport that my friends and I like to get together and play,” junior Red Shannon said.
Disc golf resembles the traditional game of golf. However, players involved in disc golf throw flying discs at an above ground target, rather than in golf where players aim for a small hole with golf balls and clubs.
Over the past decade disc golf participation has grown around 15 percent annually. To accommodate this rapid growth in popularity, McKinney has two disc golf courses: The Alex Clark Memorial Disc Golf Course and The Town Lake Course. Both have become popular spots for students to hang out and play.
“I guess so many people started playing that they had to open up another course,” Shannon said.
The Alex Clark Memorial Disc Golf Course was named after Alex Clark, an MHS student who passed away in a car accident. When Alex died, his funeral service was held at the course’s current location. Alex’s mother, Roberta Clark was honored when McKinney’s Park and Recreation Department suggested naming the course after her son.
Since his death an annual disc golf tournament has been held on The Alex Clark Memorial Disc Golf Course.
The 12th Annual Alex Clark Memorial Disc Golf Tournament will be held Saturday, Nov. 12.
“I think disc golf is a great sport for MHS to have around,” Red Shannon said.
