LASER project continues with the “Eggstraction”

The newest egg-cellent addition to the Raytheon LASER program, the Eggstraction, was conducted on Nov. 11.

The Eggstraction required designing a device to remove an egg from the center of a circle.

“The Eggstraction was really egg-citing for me,” junior Mason Lane said. “It was so easy, what a yolk.”

The device could be constructed from any material. Pulleys, carts, remote controlled cars, and more were used to remove the egg from the circle.

“We attached a really long pole to a broom and just swept the egg out of the circle,” junior Halle Powell said. “It was really simple.”

The 4.25-meter radius circle was drawn outside on the concrete, a surface that, according to junior Jordan Trant, made extracting the egg more precarious.

“The concrete was concerning, but our device was able to get to the middle of the circle pretty easily,” Jordan said. “We got the egg out quickly, and with no cracks.”

Scores were based on the time it took to remove the egg and the condition of the egg once it was removed.

“We made this cone wrapped in duct tape,” junior Thalia Granillo said. “The structure wasn’t very sound, and the egg ended up cracking like three times.”

Like the egg drop project before it, the Eggstraction  focused on teaching students design and development skills.

“This project taught me that you need to put many factors in mind for the design,” Jordan said. “ And you have to pick the best person to maneuver the object.”

The LASER project will be the Plane Drop.

“I’m nervous about the plane drop,” Halle said. “It seems way harder than the last two projects.”
